About the Dormer Masonic Study Circle

‘Dormer,’ as we habitually call it for short, is a society for Master Masons either under the United Grand Lodge of England, or under a regular Grand Lodge which is in amity.

It was founded on the 13th January 1938, with the following Objectives:

  1. To provide a Centre and Bond of Union for Brethren who, by means of serious study and research, desire to extend their knowledge of the principles on which the Order is founded.
  2. To promote the interests of Masonic education and to provide facilities for instruction by means of Lectures, Papers and open discussion at Regular Meetings of the Circle.
  3. To circulate, for the use of the Members, Proceedings of the Circle as authorised by the Governing Council and, in certain cases, to make such Transactions available to the Craft generally.

‘ ‘Dormer’ members are universally distributed over the surface of the Earth and whilst it holds its Regular Meetings at Freemasons’ Hall, London, UK, nowadays the papers presented at these meetings are accessible by Zoom during the meeting.  In addition, the papers are uploaded to the Members Area shortly after presentation and are therefore permanently accessible to all subscribing members, along with the general Transactions and Annual Proceedings.

‘Dormer’ is always interested in receiving new membership enquiries. For more information, please use the Contact Form.

Meetings

Regular meetings of the Circle take place on the third Thursday of March, June, September and December at Freemasons Hall, 60 Great Queen Street, London, WC2B 5AZ, United Kingdom, starting at 1.30pm and finishing by 3pm. We usually meet in one of the Committee Rooms: contact dormermasonicstudycircle@gmail.com, to arrange to attend unless you are accompanied by a Dormer member willing to vouch for eligibility. We reserve the right to deny entry if you are not eligible to attend.

For those members wishing to access the meetings by Zoom, the Zoom link is sent with the usual reminder a couple of weeks in advance of each meeting.

Starting in 2017, we intend to hold at least one extraordinary Dormer Meeting each year devoted to the Holy Royal Arch – this is planned for the first Thursday in November, 3.30pm, again at Freemasons Hall in Great Queen Street.

There is no Dress Code for meetings of the Study Circle (although see note about Lodge of the Double Horizon, No. 9269 and Chapter of the Double Horizon, No. 9269, below).

Papers

On becoming a subscribing member of Dormer, you will be provided with a login which gives access to the entire history of papers previously presented at the Circle.

We are always interested in Brethren coming forward to present new Papers at Circle meetings, and to be considered for inclusion in our Transactions. If you cannot attend the regular meetings of the Circle in person, we can either make arrangements to have the paper presented on your behalf or arrangements can be made for you to present your paper by Zoom. For more details, you may get in touch with the Secretary via the Contact Page.

We do not publish materials other than the Dormer Website as a rule: so if you come across papers purporting to be from Dormer Masonic Study Circle online, they have been published illegally and without our permission.

Double Horizon Lodge, No. 9269 Double Horizon Chapter, No. 9269

Lodge of the Double Horizon, No. 9269, is a Lodge warranted by the United Grand Lodge of England and working under the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London, which has the distinction of having been founded by members of the Dormer Masonic Study Circle in 1988. As such, it represents a realisation of the fondly held wishes of the founders of Dormer to practice, in Lodge, the kind of Freemasonry that Dormer talked about at its Circle meetings – the exemplification of ritual as a true ‘Mystic Art.’

Double Horizon Lodge meets at 4.30pm on the same day as Dormer Circle meetings: i.e. the third Thursday of March, June, September and December (installation). We are a non-dining Lodge, although we do have an informal ‘Harmony’ after meetings at a local establishment.

In 1991, three years after the Lodge was founded, Dormer was again instrumental in founding its associated Royal Arch Chapter – Chapter of the Double Horizon No. 9269 – to perform the same service to the Royal Arch as the Lodge did for the Craft.

Double Horizon Chapter meets at 6pm on the first Wednesday in March, July (installation), and November, and like the Lodge is a non-dining chapter.

Members of Dormer who are not already members of Double Horizon are welcome to attend the Lodge as a guest, subject to usual Masonic requirements (I.e. proof, Craft regalia, dark suit, etc). Dormer Members who are companions of the Royal Arch are likewise welcome to attend the Chapter meetings.

For more information about either Double Horizon Lodge or Double Horizon Chapter, please send a message via the Contact Page, and the webmaster will forward all correspondence to the Lodge Secretary or Scribe E of the Chapter as appropriate.
